Built in 1957, Thurgood Marshall Academic High School is a college preparatory school impressively situated on a hill with unobstructed views of downtown San Francisco and across the bay to Oakland. The campus is a prime example of reinforced concrete construction designed in the modern architectural style, typical of public buildings of the era. The campus’s robust concrete construction survived for decades until the region’s salty air and thick fog steadily weathered the campus exterior. In 2016, funded by a district bond measure the campus embarked on an extensive detailed campus assessment followed by a major modernization designed to upgrade all aspects of the campus. All the construction work was phased to allow for the campus to be occupied by students during construction.
The three-story main classroom wing totals 148,380 square feet and houses the entire school’s academic program, while the gymnasium and auditorium are separate buildings and did not undergo modernizations. The modernization included a voluntary seismic upgrade; installation of a new energy efficient exterior windows/building envelope system; and new mechanical systems and lighting designed to meet current Title 24 energy standards. Extensive interior improvements included redesigned administrative offices; redesigned campus security entry and circulation; as well as extensive interior classroom, corridor floor, wall, and ceiling replacement. The floors of the classroom wings are separated by educational programs including CTE classrooms, science laboratories, computer education, language arts, and standard classrooms. Formerly a standard classroom, a new culinary arts CTE classroom adjacent to the school kitchen was transformed with all new equipment and building systems to support its new function as a hands-on learning environment. The library, career center, cafeteria, media center, and a variety of specialized learning spaces, including special education, were fully modernized with new finishes and upgraded for accessibility, health and safety, and sustainability.
