Stargell Commons
Alameda, CA
The design of Stargell Commons reflects the industrial nature of the former Alameda Naval Air Station, just south of the Port of Oakland
Stargell Commons comprises 32 affordable residential one-, two-, and three-bedroom units on a .94-acre brownfield site. The residential buildings consist of three-story wood-framed “walk-up” style flats and townhomes over ground-floor flats. All units are designed to provide ample access to fresh air and sunlight.
The project’s aesthetic is residential in nature, with a contemporary palette of materials and detailing. Gabled roofs echo the surrounding context, with sunshade and canopy elements to relate to the pedestrian scale.
Residents enjoy ample on-site vehicle and bicycle parking, beautifully landscaped communal open spaces, a children’s play area, and a welcoming one-story community building that houses management offices. In addition to the primary site, a second parcel located to the west provides an extra 15 off-street parking stalls.

The facades are highly articulated with vertical and horizontal changes in plane and material to reduce the apparent mass along the right-of-way and create a lively streetscape
