Foon Lok West at Brooklyn Basin

Oakland, CA

Overlooking the Oakland estuary, Foon Lok West is phase one of a new affordable housing development at Brooklyn Basin. Inspired by the Cantonese words for “Joyous Community,” the six-story building includes 130 affordable family apartments.

Within the building, residents enjoy a large Community Room with a lounge area & kitchen, a learning center, a computer lab, laundry facilities, Resident Services with a dedicated onsite office, and a collection of custom artwork and murals from local artists. The third floor offers two spacious courtyards with a variety of seating options and stunning views of the Oakland waterfront. Foon Lok West also includes structured parking with a garage and a secure bike room for residents.

Designed to achieve LEED Certification, the project uses recycled content materials, energy- and water-efficient appliances, photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, and drought-tolerant landscaping.

The highly-articulated exterior uses a combination of projecting elements: deep recesses, slanted bay windows, and rhythmic windows
