The Santa Rosa Junior College Roseland campus redesigns a former K-12 campus to be the community college center for the Roseland area of Santa Rosa. The Roseland Campus Welcome Center is the first new building on campus.
The center is designed to provide an inclusive and welcoming experience for first-time college students and as a center of activity for current students. It is visible from the street and provides a well-lit beacon when many students take classes in the evening.
The Welcome Center’s design complements the site’s existing architecture to create a cohesive campus. The building provides an intimately scaled structure with community-gathering porches and landscaped areas at the front and quad sides of the building.
Interior space programming ensures that services new students need the most are located closest to the entrance. The hallways are wider than the minimum required width to provide comfortable circulation and good sight lines. Tall ceilings with clerestory windows bring natural light into the center of the building. An adjacent multi-purpose classroom and student lounge provide flexibility for larger events. Signage is in multiple languages, reflecting the diverse student body.
