The Alan Harvey Theater is a 20,946 square foot facility that replaces a former 40-year-old theater that needed replacement. The Theater anchors the campus in the northeast and combined with the adjacent STEAM classroom building also designed by HKIT, is designed to complement the historic nature of the campus and create a welcoming entrance to the campus along Magnolia Avenue.
The theater entrance faces the adjacent STEAM building, with a public courtyard that serves as an outdoor pre- and post-performance gathering space. The building’s two-story lobby is a welcoming, light-filled space accommodating up to 416 occupants for events and with doors open, allows for overflow to the courtyard.
The theater, complete with stage rigging, an orchestra shell, and acoustic panels can seat 486 including 28 orchestra seats. The stage has a sprung floor which accommodates up to 257 performers. A control booth with state-of-the art audio-visual and lighting capabilities commands the House performance spaces with specific sound and lighting variables depending on type of performance use.
The theater building also includes a conference room, department office, green room for pre-performance use, and a 1,600 square foot drama classroom with blackout capabilities.
