College of Marin Child Study Center, Kentfield

This school complex is a teaching and learning facility that serves both College of Marin’s (COM) educational program and its families. It offers a high-quality preschool program and provides a learning environment for Early Childhood Education students to observe children at play. The Child Study Center (CSC) is composed of joined modular units. It is a one-story structure comprising joined modular units with exterior materials of cement plaster, ship-lap wood siding, aluminum storefront windows and canopies, and shading devices. The architectural focus is on sustainable, durable, natural materials in a palette recalling the colors and textures of the natural surroundings. The school is organized to allow separate communities of preschool students and COM students to engage in learning. In addition to two preschool classrooms, the Center provides an observation room, a teaching classroom, and support spaces for Center staff.
