Channing House New Healthcare Center, Palo Alto

Established in 1961, Channing House is a market-rate senior housing facility on a very tight site in downtown Palo Alto with independent living units, assisted living care and skilled nursing facilities. HKIT Architects was retained to evaluate the original modernist facility which consisted of an outdated and obsolete skilled nursing wing (i.e. 3-4 people per room), inadequate assisted living which did not incorporate contemporary ideas of aging-in-place, and noticeable wear and tear on the building such as issues with acoustics, lighting, etc. The study resulted in a multi-phased project including significant interior upgrades and improvements to the original building, a wellness center and a brand new health care center with one floor dedicated to assisted living and a new skilled nursing facility located on the lot adjacent to the existing building.
