Harvest Park Middle School IPAL Inclusive Playground
Pleasanton, CA
A new inclusive preschool playground designed with all-abilities outdoor activity space
The Inclusive Play And Learn (IPAL) preschool is Pleasanton’s first inclusive preschool for children with and without disabilities.
The IPAL play yard is a unique modernization project that creates a safe, accessible playground for students. Site gradation and accessibility were improved between the classroom courtyard and the lower area of the playground, making it usable for all levels of mobility. A sensory path with various pavers and “crayon rail” along the playground perimeter allows for safe exploration.
A variety of active and passive zones include a new play structure, slide, climbing equipment, interactive musical instruments, sensory/tactile play elements, drawing panels, and quiet seating areas. The landscape design features include a combination of authentic and artificial turf, play bark, and plants with sensory attributes – scent, texture, and color.
