Thurgood Marshall Academic High School Modernization

San Francisco, CA

Built in 1957, Thurgood Marshall Academic High School is a college preparatory school nestled atop a hill with panoramic views of San Francisco and Oakland. The campus is a prime example of mid-century modern design, with reinforced concrete construction that has stood the test of time. Weathered by decades of salty air and dense fog, the campus embarked on an extensive assessment driven by a district bond measure. Occupied by students throughout the process, this extensive modernization project touched almost every aspect of the campus.

Spanning 148,380 square-feet across three stories, the main classroom wing houses the school’s entire academic program. A voluntary seismic upgrade, energy-efficient windows, advanced mechanical systems, and lighting in compliance with Title 24 energy standards were key components of the modernization. Extensive interior improvements included redesigned administrative offices, enhanced security entryways, and restored classrooms, corridors, and learning spaces.

From CTE classrooms to science laboratories, the educational landscape was thoughtfully revitalized. Formerly a standard classroom, a new culinary arts CTE classroom adjacent to the school kitchen was transformed with all new equipment and building systems to support its new function as a hands-on learning environment. The library, career center, cafeteria, media center, and specialized learning spaces were fully upgraded for accessibility, health, safety, and sustainability.

The campus modernization included major site improvements for arrival and accessibility
